“Love is the answer, and you know that for sure; Love is a flower, you’ve got to let it grow.” – John Lennon
I can’t say for sure what John Lennon had in mind when he wrote the song Mind Games, which this quote is from, but I am guessing that it was relating to the Book of the same name by Jean Houston and Robert Masters. I’ve never read the book myself, but it was apparently a favorite of Lennon and both the book, and Lennon’s song advocate peace, love, and unity.
I’ve noticed that peace, love, and unity seem to be recurring themes in many of John Lennon’s quotes and song lyrics. That may be why his name seems to come up often when I am looking for a quote that speaks to me. At the risk of sounding “hippie”, I try to keep those 3 words as a recurring theme in my own life and decisions.
In my opinion, a flower is a great symbol for these things, but especially love. A flower symbolizes love to many people. Have you ever been to a wedding without flowers? People also give flowers as gifts on special dates, anniversaries, and holidays. Others send flowers to a funeral to comfort those who have lost their loved ones. And as for this quote “you’ve got to let it grow” can be interpreted in different ways, but to me it means that we, as people, change and grow as time goes by and we need to leave room for our love to change and grow with us. Jarrod and I were 18 and 19 when we met. That being said, we have changed and grown A LOT in the past 17 years and if we didn’t let our love grow with us, we wouldn’t have been together still. Or if we were then we certainly wouldn’t be happy. Just in these past few months we have grown a lot and our love grew with us. Although our lives are not perfect and we aren’t yet living the lives we are striving for, we are the happiest that we’ve been in a long time and I think that our love was the answer.
What is your favorite flower? Does it mean anything special to you?
